Academic Partners

VAMC Big Spring is affiliated with the Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTHSC), Lubbock and Odessa, Texas.

Veterans Service Organizations

VAMC Big Spring maintains a good working relationship with all of our veteran service organization (VSO) partners.  We regularly brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting veterans' health care.

An All Veterans Council has been established which includes stakeholders from a number of veterans groups.  The All Veterans Council meets quarterly.

New Initiatives:

VAMC Big Spring is activately participating in two national collaborative projects:  the Integrated Ethics program and the Colorectal Cancer Care Collaborative.  VAMC Big Spring was selected as the pilot site for the Integtrated Ethics program.

VAMC Big Spring has also initiated a Care Coordination/Home Telehealth (CCHT) Program to help veteran patients with chronic conditions such as congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease self-manage their condition and remain living independently in their own homes.

Teleretinal imaging - used to assess veteran patients with diabetes for diabetic conditions of the eye.

Mental Health Care - Mental health provider positions have been established in 3 of the VA staffed CBOCs, which includes acute mental health providers and substance abuse counselors.  The fourth VA staffed CBOC provides mental health care through telemedicine at the clinic.  Staffing for mental health has also been increased at the Big Spring campus to better provide for the needs of veterans.  Included in these programs are expansion of substance abuse programs and the establishment of PTSD, suicide prevention, and local recovery coordinator positions.
