About the Program
The Extended Care and Rehabilitation Program at the West Texas VA Health Care System is composed of five areas of service to our veterans-
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Extended Care
- Long term care for qualified veterans
- Respite care
- Palliative care
Services Offered
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)
PM&R services include —
- occupational therapy
- physical therapy
- speech therapy
- wound care
- service to veterans in need of rehabilitation following amputation and stroke
Extended Care & Transitional Unit (ECTU)
The ECTU is a hospital-based transitional care unit for veterans who require extended rehabilitation and care following surgery and/or lengthy hospitalization before returning to independent living.
Long Term Care
Long term care is available to veterans who have met necessary medical & eligibility requirements.
Respite Care
Respite caer is a distinct VA program with the unique purpose of providing temporary relief for unpaid caregivers from routine care giving tasks, thus supporting caregivers in maintaining the chronically ill veteran in the home. Veterans are eligible for 28 days of respite care per year in ECTU.
Palliative Care
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is committed to improve end-of-life care for veterans by providing palliative care on the ECTU. The staff cares for the veteran as well as providing support for the family duing this difficult time.
